Northern Lights stands as one of the most iconic and in-demand Indica strains in cannabis history. Believed to be a hybrid of Afghani and Thai landrace genetics, its true origins remain somewhat uncertain. There, breeder Neville Schoenmaker developed several phenotypes in the 1980s for The Seed Bank, which later evolved into Sensi Seeds.

The most renowned variant, Northern Lights #5, earned top honors at the Cannabis Cup in 1989, 1990, and 1992.
